Methods Machine Tools, Inc., a supplier of precision machine tools, offers pre-engineered automation solutions. One example, which was displayed at the imX event, is the Med Cell. This stand-alone, pre-engineered solution features a five-axis Fanuc RoboDrill that is loaded and unloaded automatically by a Fanuc Robotics LR Mate 200iC robot. The five-axis table on the RoboDrill has a built-in clamping system that utilizes commercially available pallets. The cell design lends itself to the medical industry and can be used  in other automation system applications based around five-axis manufacturing.

At the event, the Med Cell included a pallet identification system, which enables the user to place pallets of different parts, one after another, on the in-feed conveyor and have the system identify the pallet and call up the corresponding machining program.  This enables the user to run lot sizes as low as one.
