EDM Drill/Mill Cuts 3D Turbine Blade Diffuser Shapes
Eastec 2017: EDM Network will exhibit Chmer EDM’s six-axis AD5L EDM Drill/Mill, a high-speed EDM drilling machine that can also mill 3D diffuser shapes required for air cooling in jet engines and industrial gas turbine generators.
EDM Network will exhibit Chmer EDM’s six-axis AD5L EDM Drill/Mill, a high-speed EDM drilling machine that can also mill 3D diffuser shapes required for air cooling in jet engines and industrial gas turbine generators. The AD5L can be equipped for fully submerged operation or standard flushing. Also available are a 20-position rotary electrode changer and a guide changer to handle different electrode diameters in one setup.
The EDM’s X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measure 500 × 300 × 350 mm, with an optional Z-axis travel of 600 mm. The X and Y axes are driven by the Chmer linear motors using Panasonic drives with precision glass scales for positioning accuracy. Submersible A-B index tables are available from MMK, Yukiwa, Parkson, Hirschmann and others. Electrode diameters range from 0.2 to 6.0 mm.
The more common twist drill point geometries often are not the best for the job at hand. By choosing the best point for the material being drilled, it is possible to achieve better tool life, hole geometry, precision, and productivity.
Creating threaded holes in titanium alloys calls for proper techniques based on an understanding of both the properties of these materials and the peculiarities of the tapping process.
Applying ceramic inserts is not a simple substitution of one cutting tool material for another. There are significant process considerations that shops should examine carefully in order to realize performance and tool life expectations from ceramic inserts. Here's a look at some of the ways they are used.
