Delcam’s 2016 release of FeatureCAM, a feature-based programming system, offers enhancements focused on speed—specifically, updates to the Vortex high-efficiency area-clearance strategy. Vortex is designed to provide fast, safe metal removal using solid carbide tooling, particularly those whose designs cut deeper by using the full flute length as the cutting surface. The program produces tool paths with a controlled engagement angle to maintain the optimum cutting conditions for the complete roughing cycle, promoting faster machining and longer tool life.

Also added is the ability to adjust and fine-tune the noncutting moves of 2.5D and 3D Vortex tool paths, with options to retract the tool and/or to increase the feed rate. These options can be set individually or combined to achieve an optimum tool path with reduced cycle time.

Other enhancements in the 2016 release include support for bar-fed mills, more efficient turning and user interface improvements to ease and speed programming, especially when using multiple setups.
