Exsys Tool’s 90-degree skiving drilling and milling head provides angled drilling and milling capabilities on turning centers and also enables the machines to perform gear skiving operations. The head generates both internal and external gears with helical profiles as well as gears close to part shoulders without interference.

The drilling and milling head enables shops to achieve the angled positions necessary for gear skiving and for the creation of integral splines, the company says. The drilling and milling head operates at spindle speeds of 3,000 rpm and delivers a torque output of 40 Nm and is also compatible with external coolant supplies.

According to the company, on the skiving drilling and milling head, set screws adjust head position 45 degrees up or down for the system’s full 90-degree range of motion. An operator loosens the set screws, manually sets the position of the head and tightens the screws.

Hummingbird takes on machining work that is too small for most shops to handle. In fact, Hummingbird tries not to handle it either. To accurately machine the tiniest parts, this shop relies on processes that are as hands-off as possible.

  • The Humble Pull Stud

I’ve said that the toolholder is the least appreciated element in many milling processes, but the pull stud (or retention knob) is perhaps the least appreciated component of the toolholder.

Angle heads can enable a three-axis machine tool to be more versatile. That said, this shop explains that there’s more to getting started using them than simply loading them into a machine’s spindle.
