Comet Solutions is developing a suite of SimApps, or simulation applications, for gearbox design and manufacturing. The suite will provide automated processes integrating tools frequently used throughout gearbox development (CAD, finite element analysis, multibody dynamics, gear/bearing simulation and computational fluid dynamics) in order to predict and optimize performance in the areas of acoustics, vibration, dynamics, durability, reliability, efficiency, and cost and weight management.

Developed in cooperation with Advanced Drivetrain Engineering and Technology and using Smart Manufacturing Technology’s Masta software, the new Gearbox Durability SimApp enables basic durability evaluations of various gearbox system designs. By loading a specific duty cycle into the application, designers can run an automated durability analysis of the entire gearbox system, including the effects of housing, shaft and bearing deflections. This SimApp is intended to promote quick turnaround regarding product capabilities, while also enabling feedback for refinement of future designs.
