Fastems’ Manufacturing Management Software (MMS) is a progressive solution for automatic production processing, complete with planning, controlling, visualizing and monitoring capabilities. Based on a manufacturer’s current order and all required or available resources, the software plans the production directly from an ERP system. The system administrates all CNC programs needed for the production processes in addition to all tool data. It also monitors tool life and prompts the operator for new tooling if required. If an unforeseen situation should arise that was not included in the production, such as a particularly urgent order, it can automatically rearrange the schedule in real time, keeping the changed production process priorities in consideration.
Introduced at IMTS 2008, this communications protocol for CNC machines and other manufacturing equipment is already helping shops and plants implement effective machine monitoring systems. Although these "early adopters" are motivated by the long-term promise of enterprise-wide efficiency gains, their experience with pilot projects shows that benefits derived in the short term are substantial and worthwhile.
A panel discussion at the recent Top Shops Conference focused on various points of view regarding the value of connecting machine tools to a network for monitoring performance and recording results. Because machine monitoring helps a shop make better decisions about manufacturing processes, it is a good example of data-driven manufacturing in action.
Having fully interactive access to shopfloor control software enables supervisors at metal finishing and repair job shop to monitor shop activities and make better decisions on the spot.
