The latest versions of HyperMill CAD/CAM software from Open Mind Technologies encompass a range of user-friendly enhancements and new machining strategies. Developed with Industry 4.0 in mind, HyperMill Virtual Machining features a Machining Optimizer to improve tool paths traditionally calculated in the CAM engine.,It incorporates knowledge of the part model, tooling, the toolpath calculation and collision check engine, and the machine tool model with its physical constraints. The system enables smoothly and safely linking individual part programs to keep the cutter close to the workpiece, the company says.
The HyperMill Automation Center automates the job list creation processes in HyperCAD-S, serving as both a development and runtime environment. New features also include the ability to select and position the clamping device and define a uniform process for all programmers.
For five-axis machining, the integrated HyperMill Maxx Machining finishing module optimizes the use of conical barrel cutters to reduce machining cycle times. The module is effective for machining planar, ruled and curved surfaces often found in complex five-axis components, the company says. The software also includes roughing and drilling modules.
HyperMill also supports 3D printing and subtractive machining on one machine tool. HyperMill Additive Manufacturing offers flexible strategies for additive material applications, including filling strategies for both planes and freeform shapes, and in 2D and 3D sections. Applications also include hybrid machining to fix damaged parts and hybrid machining on an existing component.
The additional rotary milling axis on these machines allows them to complete many types of complex parts in a single setup, but these machines have gained a reputation for being difficult to program. Today’s CAM software, however, eases the programming challenge significantly.
