Available from Methods Machine Tools, the Yasda YBM 649V3 three-axis CNC vertical jig borer provides high-speed, precision boring and milling for high-accuracy mold, die and complex component manufacturing. The machining center is designed to simplify moldmaking in industries such as aerospace, medical and defense, among others. According to the company, the machine’s accuracy and rigidly virtually eliminates the need for hand polishing.

The spindle offers speeds ranging to 24,000 rpm and a 7/24-taper, No. 40 spindle taper hole. A 30,000-rpm spindle is available as an option. Spindle-bearing, self-adjusting preload technology provides the optimum preload at the full range of spindle speeds. The rugged spindle enables machining operations ranging from heavy-duty roughing to delicate fine finishing, while increasing tool and spindle bearing life.

A 27.5" × 17.7" (700 × 450 mm) worktable accommodates workpieces weighing as much as 661 lbs (300 kg), and the X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measure 23.6" × 15.7" × 13.8" (600 × 400 × 350 mm), respectively. An automatic toolchanger accommodates as many as 100 tools. The machine also is equipped with a FANUC 31i-Model 5 controller, improved chip disposal, and large coolant and lubrication tank capacities.

A reinforcement rib under the bridge provides rigidity, minimizing vibration during acceleration and deceleration. The lower weight of the spindle head and saddle also is said to optimize machining efficiency, and the hand-scraped alignment of the through-hardened 60 RC box ways provides improved mechanical accuracy. A bridge cooling system is located under the X-axis guide to reduce thermal distortion, while a jacket cooling system for the X- and Y-axis ballnuts prevents the loss of ballscrew pre-tension.
