Staying adaptable and leading through change for 95 years and counting, Modern Machine Shop celebrates its 95th Anniversary since its first publication in 1928.

Staying modern means staying adaptable. This month marks Modern Machine Shop’s 95thAnniversary since publishing our first issue in June of 1928 — a near-century’s span wherein staying adaptable and leading through change has been as critical for us as it has been for machine shops across the United States.

Anniversaries are a time to reflect and recommit. For example, did you know that the Great Depression started just over one year after Modern Machine Shop’s first issue? But we lived through it. The Great Recession? We outlasted that, too. Not even a global pandemic could keep us down, because we adapted and responded to our chief concern: how best to serve our readers.

Time passes, conditions change, the world progresses —
those who are found keeping pace with the new order of things
are those young enough in mind and spirit to recognize
the value of the new and make themselves a part of it.

— Don G. Gardner, Founder, Gardner Business Media and Modern Machine Shop

When we walk into a machine shop to report on their latest and greatest techniques and technologies — our mission for 95 years and counting — most shop owners and managers are quick to tell us that they are avid readers of Modern Machine Shop. In many cases, they say, the same was true for their parents and grandparents. We are beyond grateful for that, just as we are grateful for the opportunity to cover our nation’s strongest enduring asset — a manufacturing and metalworking industry that is constantly reinventing itself, moving our country forward through sheer will and determination.

For 95 years, Modern Machine Shop has made it our mission to help shops continuously improve, to learn from each other, and to help you — the leaders of these vital businesses — be the best you can be. And like you, we have evolved and innovated over the years, and found ways inform and engage our audience beyond the print magazine, including events like TASC – The Automated Shop Conference, the “View From My Shop” video series, webinars, the "Made in the USA” podcast, or the Top Shops benchmarking program. As our founder Don Gardner stated nearly a century ago, it is our mission to keep pace, to stay young enough in mind and spirit to recognize the value of the new, and make ourselves a part of it. With your support, we will be honored to do so for the next 95 years.

From all of us at Modern Machine Shop, thank you.
