Mori Seiki’s Digital Technology Laboratory (DTL), a 71,000-square-foot laboratory and technical center in Davis, California, has achieved LEED Gold certification for sustainable design. LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a green building rating system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) in an effort ot promote and recognize sustainable “green” design practices.
The $15 million facility, which was completed in May of 2009, is the first private-sector building to achieve certification at the Gold level in Davis and one of only a few in the Sacramento region. Features include energy-efficient fluorescent lighting with dimmable ballasts and motion detection; a 172-kW photovoltaic system; extensive daylighting; low-flow plumbing fixtures; electric hand dryers; extensive use of materials from rapidly renewable sources; low volatile-organic-compound glues, caulks and paints to improve indoor air quality; and efficient air conditioning systems. Additionally, bicycle racks and shower facilities encourage employees to consider alternate commuting methods.
