Delcam offers a data repair module for its FeatureCAM system. The module, which is based on PowerShape CAD software functionality, enables users to repair poor-quality CAD models from a range of design software. Solid Doctor enables users to automatically read in and repair models from a variety of sources and output a file that can be read directly into the CAM software. The module is compatible with standard formats, such as IGES and STEP, as well as native files, such as Catia, Pro/Engineer and Inventor.
Common problems of translating low-precision and incomplete data include gaps and overlaps between surfaces and duplicated and missing surfaces. Solid Doctor is designed to address these issues and generate a valid, high-precision model ready for programming. Combining automated and advanced tools enables simple repairs to be carried out quickly and easily, while more complex problems can be overcome by deleting and replacing the existing surfaces within the model, the company says.
The Solid Doctor analyzes the model and highlights any problems found with warning labels. Then, the automated repair sequence can then be run, and each corrected issue has its label changed from red to green as it is repaired.
For serious problems that remain, Smart Surfacing technology from PowerShape can generate replacement surfaces in the affected area. Users can delete the existing surfaces and sketch around the area to be repaired. The software can then analyze the boundary and suggest the most appropriate type of surface to fill the space. Once the surfaces are repaired, they are automatically incorporated back into the model. This process continues until all the inconsistencies have been resolved and a model is created that is suitable for machining.
