Chevalier Machinery Inc. offers a gantry-type VMC for machining heavy, oversized workpieces. The work area in a 104" × 200" model can mill a part that measures 193" × 98" × 35" and weighs as much as 33,000 lbs. The machine features oversized columns and extra-wide box ways on a slanted Y-axis beam for equal force distribution. The X axis has zero-backlash roller linear guideways and the spindle centerline is said to be stable in part because of the bridge’s slanted design. The company says a dual pneumatic counterbalance system on the Z axis supports the spindle head and provides the smooth movement required for 3D contouring operations.
