You might need a new machining center, but what kind should you buy? Jason Schumacher of machine tool distributor Hartwig argues that it may well be time for a horizontal machining center. Many shops equipped with only VMCs are overdue to introduce an HMC into the mix. Among the advantages that Mr. Schumacher cites are higher spindle utilization and shorter setup times. Read more. For the right family of parts, he says, one HMC could deliver throughput equal to three VMCs.
