The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) and the MTConnect Institute announced the start of the first phase of the MTConnect Challenge: Creating Manufacturing Intelligence. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and Defense-Wide Manufacturing Science and Technology (DMS&T) ManTech, the competition seeks to engage and stimulate development of advanced manufacturing intelligence applications that utilize MTConnect, an open, royalty-free set of communications standards intended to foster greater interoperability between manufacturing equipment.  
 
The first phase is open through May 31, and winners will be announced June 21. The second phase, which involves software applications, is open July 1 through January 31, 2014.
