In its West Building booth, Scientific Cutting Tools (SCT) tells the story of how the recent addition of three cutting tool manufacturing technologies helps it create high-performance cutting tools for myriad challenging applications. The company refers to it as its “Tech Trifecta,” which includes:

  • Zoller inspection. Measurement equipment such as the Zoller Genius and PomSkpGo enables SCT to inspect and verify critical tool geometry with a high degree of consistency. By measuring features such as diameter, cutting geometry and edge consistency, SCT can better identify variation and confirm that a tool is ready for the next manufacturing step.
  • ANCA precision edge preparation. SCT’s ANCA EPX-SF stream-finishing machine uses controlled granular media to hone and polish cutting tools at the micro level. The process creates a more consistent cutting edge and smoother surface before coating.
  • CemeCon HiPIMS coating. With the addition of the CemeCon CC800 HiPIMS system, SCT brings advanced PVD coating capability in-house. HiPIMS, or High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering, uses high-energy pulses to produce dense, smooth and strongly adhered coatings.

A tabletop display illustrates that tool manufacturing progression through four stages: inspection, preparation, coating and result. Using the same 15-degree helical thread mill throughout, SCT shows how greater control of geometry inspection, edge condition and coating contributes to a quality, finished tool.

Plus, a second tabletop display connects that manufacturing story to tooling focused on porting and thread milling. It features the company’s SAE J1926 and AS5202 port kits, the complete Versa-coated Port Mill lineup and representative thread mill families. And know that there’s also a raffle for as much as $500 in SCT tooling, giving one attendee the opportunity to put the featured porting or threading technology to work in his or her own shop.
