Extra Security for Milling Titanium

The weak link in heavy milling of titanium is often the toolholder.

The weak link in heavy milling of titanium is often the toolholder. The milling tool might pull out of a shrink fit holder. To permit more aggressive cutting in titanium, Command Tooling Systems is developing a new "Zero Pull" toolholder concept. The shrink fit holder uses locking pins that mate with a groove machined in the endmill to mechanically secure the tool. The new holder design is about to enter beta testing in aerospace machining applications, but the company brought a version of the holder to the show so it could begin telling shops about the Zero Pull concept.
