It’s not enough to encourage students to take STEM courses or talk about worker shortages in order to close the skills gap; to attract the Next Generation workforce, young people need to see what manufacturing is really like. CycleStart, a new web series created by Hurco in partnership with Sandvik Coromant and with support from SME, shows real machinists at work to give viewers a taste of the challenges and rewards of a manufacturing career.

Each of the short episodes (about six minutes each) takes place in a work environment, with a featured machinist completing a task and explaining each step to the viewer. For example, the first episode features Adam, a machinist for S-3 Industries of Ontario, Canada, who describes his work as he manufactures an aluminum part on a three-axis CNC mill.
