Stratasys, a manufacturer of 3D printers, has embarked on a joint initiative with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to develop fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology into a mainstream manufacturing process. The overarching goal is to reduce the energy usage of U.S. industry, commercialize new products more quickly and improve U.S. manufacturing competitiveness. According to the company, meeting that goal requires achieving two primary objectives: developing in-process inspection to assure part quality and suitability for service, and developing carbon-fiber-reinforced FDM feedstock materials for the production of strong, lightweight components.
