Zeiss Quality Excellence Center Wins Engineering Award
Zeiss’ Quality Excellence Center in Wixom, Michigan, has won an Engineering Honorable Conceptor Award at ACEC’s 2021 Engineering & Surveying Excellence Awards Competition.
Zeiss Industrial Quality Solutions’ Wixom, Michigan, Quality Excellence Center has won an Engineering Honorable Conceptor Award in the 2021 Engineering & Surveying Excellence Awards Competition from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC/M). The ACEC recognized Zeiss for applying holistic engineering disciplines to the design of the building, which is located in the Detroit metro area. The building also represents a step forward in the interconnectivity of quality inspection equipment with the infrastructure of modern smart factory environments.
The Quality Excellence Center contains a customer demonstration area with new technologies and systems, and gives customers access to comprehensive training, support and metrology services. The center's broad portfolio of dimensional metrology and inspection equipment and services covers a wide range of industries and applications: automotive, including car body, powertrain and EVs; medical; aerospace and defense; additive manufacturing; electronics; visual inspection; and general manufacturing.
Zeiss measuring specialists at the facility can perform proof-of-capability demonstrations for multidimensional measurement, surface form, geometry, non-destructive testing and surface defect detection equipment.
The Quality Excellence Center prioritized a sustainable design alongside the user experience. "As sustainability is one of our core values, we wanted to make sure that our green spaces adhered to the Zeiss tradition," says Michael Kirchner, president of Zeiss Industrial Quality Solutions. "We are utilizing solar power to support our facility and have EUV charging stations for our employees and guests. We also produce large systems and measure very large components for our customers, so access and transport paths had to be optimized."
During the virtual Engineering & Surveying Excellence Awards Gala on Feb. 26, Zeiss’ building also qualified for the 2021 Grand Conceptor Award. This honor signifies the year's best overall engineering achievement and will be awarded during the upcoming virtual Engineering Excellence Awards Gala, scheduled for June 17, 2021.
This shop has a plan for dramatically expanding its contract machining business in high-value markets.
A laser scanning system helps this shop capture the free-form surfaces on a hand-sculpted original. The resulting digitized models are the basis for CAM applications such as programming a CNC machining center.
Just because dial indicators have been around since the early 1900s, don't expect them to fade away with the last century. This tool's long-term popularity is well earned.
