Jergens Spindle Gripper Supports Unattended Machining

Jergens Inc. adds the MT-S spindle gripper to its range of workholding products for automated and unattended applications, aiming for greater machine utilization. The MT-S spindle gripper supports continued machine cycles by picking and placing finished components in a temporary part-loading tray located on the machine table.

Functioning as a first-level automation solution without a robot, the MT-S is stored in the tool magazine like any tool and engaged at the end of each cycle. Depending on the part size and configuration, many pieces can be machined and stored with little or no operator intervention. Pre-machined parts are loaded, machined and placed (unloaded) by the MT-S, enabling a continuous cycle until the part-loading tray is full. An easy-to-adjust gripping force plus counterbalance function promotes optimal protection for all components.

The MT-S comes with several gripper styles and easy-to-change inserts that match part geometrical needs. The unit’s power source can be either pneumatic (air through the spindle) or hydraulic (coolant supply). The spindle gripper reduces setup times for small to medium-sized batches of workpieces up to 17.6 lbs (8 kg).

According to the company, the new gripper requires no additional floor space, offers a lower initial investment compared to robotics and is easy to train without extensive programming. The MT-S is one of several automation solutions from Jergens, which also includes a machine washdown tool, zero point system and a range of pneumatic and hydraulic devices.
