Kyocera SGS Precision Tools unveils the Z-Carb XPR high-performance end mill line with plunging and ramping capabilities. According to the company, these cutters can enable machinists to utilize more aggressive tool paths and use a variety of roughing and finishing techniques, while still maintaining precision and durability.

The Z-Carb XPR is engineered for advanced axial workpiece entry techniques, including plunging, ramping and helical interpolation, due to its end teeth design. This feature, combined with completely variable geometry, enables increased speeds and feeds while minimizing chatter and resonant vibrations, which can result in smoother and more efficient machining operations. According to Kyocera, the tool’s universal geometry makes it suitable for use across a range of material groups, providing versatility in various applications and enhancing performance in slotting, advanced roughing, general roughing, semi-finishing and finishing operations.

Users can choose from two standard coatings developed for extended protection and tool life. First, Kyocera’s Megacoat Nano coating technology features nanolayers for optimal wear resistance and high oxidation resistance, enabling operation at high temperatures. The layered structure also gives the coating the toughness required to resist chipping in high efficiency machining applications. Second, the Ti-Namite-X coating handles a range of applications from high- and low-alloy steels to hardened materials. It is suitable for operations which require high cutting speeds, high temperatures at the cutting edge and high metal removal rates.

According to the company, benefits of the tool include:

  • Open end tooth design facilitates smooth and efficient chip evacuation when used in axial applications such as plunging, ramping and helical interpolation.
  • End teeth wiper flat can increase corner strength and improve workpiece floor surface finish.
  • Variable helix, rake and flute indexing can eliminate harmonics, suppress chatter, produce optimal chip shape and control cutting zone temperature.
  • Specialized flute shape provides chip evacuation up to 2 × D depth of cut
  • Physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating technology, which extends tool life in a range of material applications.
